I’ll admit it. I’m a recovering notebook + pen hoarder. However, it pleases me to say that after 33 years of life, I have narrowed down my absolute must-have paper products, pens, and “highlighters” that get me through my workday without fail.
Disclaimer: Everyone has their own handwriting style and what I love may not be your favorite. I’m here for the smooth writing pens yet my left-handed daughter has to stick to ballpoint or else she’s dragging her vocab words across the page and coming home with black and blue palms. 🤦🏻♀️
Now that we got that out of the way, allow me to introduce you to TBH Capsule Office’s paper products + writing utensils.
I won’t go into too much detail. Even if you’re new around here, you should know by now that I’m a diehard fan of the fully customizable Golden Coil planners. In fact, the TBH Capsule Office blog post series was kicked off with an entire blog post dedicated to Golden Coil — CHECK IT OUT HERE!!
I actually just got my 2022 planner in and am about to order my 2023 planner, too! Trust me, there’s a method to the madness and I’ll explain it all soon in another blog post!
I’ve attempted to lessen the time I spend jotting down notes in a notebook as I obviously write slower than I type and if I forget my notebook at home with my client call notes and need to fire a post-call email from the car lane I have no easy access to those notes and I’m screwed.
Needless to say, when I’m not taking notes in ClickUp or Google Docs, you can find me writing out my lengthy thoughts in my cream or black Note to Self journal from Target (the color depends on my mood).
The Note to Self journals have quickly become an entrepreneur fave and make ample appearances in brand shoots and rightfully so.
They are hardback, durable, the fabric covers are neutral yet the fabric gives the notebook a luxury feel, filled with incredibly smooth pages, and above all else, the pages GLIDE when ripped out. Idk about you, but if I don’t like a page I need to be able to tear it out and tear it out FAST. Bless the designer of this notebook for making that possible.
I have THREE of these journals in my office, one still in its wrapper and I have every intention of continuing to swipe one or two each time I go to Target. Not because I’m falling back into my hoarder tendencies but because I truly love these notebooks so much that I want to do everything I can to make sure I have plenty to get me through the next few years 🙃
Paper Product Accessories
I can’t even think about Post-it notes without seeing this scene play out in my brain.
If you haven’t seen Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion, where have you been?!
I didn’t invent Post-it notes, but God bless the human who did.
All that to say, I truly have a hard time buying off-brand Post-its, yet I’m not exactly drawn to the neon colors… inter the TRANSPARENT Post-it notes (**the Post-it angels sing**).
I have nothing bad to say about these. My pen doesn’t smear. I can use a pencil on the rare occasion one is in my hand, and they can literally go anywhere and like a chameleon, they blend right in. They make my neutral-leaning heart say “ahhhh.”
My second favorite Post-it Note brand product has got to be these white Post-it tabs. If you follow me on IG, you saw in my 2022 Golden Coil IGTV you’ll have already seen these white Post-it tabs in all their glory.
I add them to my GC planners to divide out the months for easy flip-to access. If they were colored, I wouldn’t even bother, BUT and this is a big BUT, because they are on-brand aka neutral and white, I don’t even hesitate and I put them in first thing when my new planner arrives! I write the months on them with one of my favorite pens, the ink doesn’t smear, and I am on my way!
Fun Fact: Post-it notes were invented by Arthur Fry. You can read all about Post-it notes, how they came to be, and even some fun facts about the beloved desktop staple HERE!
Pens + Markers
This section is gonna be short and sweet. I have one felt-tip and one roller-ball pen that have each been my go-to writing utensils for years. And I mean, I’ve been using Sharpie pens since they first caught my eye at Target a long time ago.
It was a HUGE deal when Sharpie released their non-bleeding felt tip pen and I was and still am HERE 👏🏼 FOR 👏🏼 IT.
When it comes to anything other than felt tip, I steer clear from gel pens and have been a lover of the Pilot Acroball since my days of working in a corporate law firm. I used to write my name on Post-it notes, cut them down to size, and tape them onto my pens that’s how much I loved them!
Don’t get me wrong, when I was growing up in the 90’s and early 2000’s I loved me some gel pens. Like, seriously. You could always find these or these in my Trapper Keeper along with some black paper to doodle on.
Fun Fact #2: I grew up in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I’m a late 80’s baby but a 90’s and 00’s child. The 90’s and early 00’s gave us some of the best fashion, movies, music, accessories and gel pens life had to offer.
MARKERS / HIGHLIGHTERS
Ok ok, I know these markers aren’t officially highlighters, but I need to bow down to the Tombow Dual End Brush Pens.
Tombows truly are what make color-coding on paper feel so on brand. Ever since I got my first pack a few years ago, I’ve been using them to color code my life on paper and they couldn’t be more on-brand with TBH’s neutral palette.
Gone are the days of neon Post-it notes and highlighters. Here to stay are TBH Capsule Office-approved notebooks and writing utensils that hold their own and won’t be leaving my desktop anytime soon.
